Albums Of The Year No. 14

Today we have:

14. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds- Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!

With their 14th album, Mr Cave and his band of Bad Seeds may have released their poppiest album ever. Whilst it's never as dark as 'Tender Prey', or as beautiful as 'No More Shall We Part', 'Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!' can be just a gripping as the former and just as relaxed as the latter.

Something that reverberates throughout the album is a feeling of sexuality. Sometimes it's frustrated sometimes sensual. It's always in the background though. It's upfront on the title track though, a noisey yet laid back song thats being insanely catchy. Nick Caves lyrics are superb (they usually are anyway) telling the amusing tale of Lazarus being resurrected in New York and getting it on with many a lady.

There are quite a few fast paced songs on the album (probably inspired by their recent Grinderman project) which are quite addictive too. 'Todays Lesson', 'Albert Goes West' and 'Lie Down Here (And Be My Girl)' are all fantastic numbers who can dance and sing along too, being bass heavy, kinda noisey and with some great acoustic guitar work.

The album is more often than not slow and complative, which is a style the band excel at. 'Night Of The Lotus Eaters' is beautifully atmospheric with its fuzzy bassline and 'Hold On To Yourself' is a gorgeous quiet number thats perfect to relax to. Nick Caves lyrics are fantastic on both being somewhat sinister yet welcoming on the former and lovelorn and yearning on the latter.

Apart from the title track, there are two definate other highlights to the album. 'We Call Upon The Author' is a brilliant diatribe against the press and includes some awesome breakdowns midway through. The other highlight is the outstanding closer 'More News From Nowhere'. A very relaxed and atmospheric number with a fantastic bassline hook repeated between verses.

It's at times addictive and always catchy, Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! is a fine little album and yet another piece of brilliance from the band.
