A Shocking Lack Thereof...

So, we're now more or less a quarter of the way through the year and you'd think I'd have a lot to talk about albums wise woudln't you?

Well, the reality is, I haven't. For some reason I'm not searching out new albums to purchase/download as much as I have done in the past. Purchasing I'm cutting down on in the first plae (I'm a poor student and need to save money somehow), but I usually go on massive downloading sprees to try and aquire lots of new musics. I just haven't done that much recently and when I have it hasn't been for anything new. I've been mostly checking out older stuffs like Mars Volta, Hundred Reasons and ...Trail Of Dead (though I will listen to their new un some point soon).

I think it's something to do with the fact my collection is now huge. I now have over 1000 different releases (albums and singles, + mostly legal) and I seem to be content with just sticking with what I've already got at the moment. I just haven't the motivation to get up and go to my local record shops and get new albums or to hope on my laptop and search for them online. And I really don't understand why I don't have this motivation at the moment and why I'm not actively searching for new music.

Maybe it's because what I know has been released this year hasn't necessarily been from bands I'm obsessed with. Of what I've listened to, the new Sky Larkin album is pretty ace but I doubt it has any staying power with me. I listened to the new Metric sstreamed on myspace and it sounded great but I haven't returned to it as yet). U2 and Joe Gideon released damn fine albums but will probably suffer the same fate as Sky Larkin. Woodpigeon pleasantly suprised me with their album but i've not wanted to listen to it again despite enjoying it. Animal Collective's latest is just stupidly over rated (It's alright, but it's not anywhere near the high standard of Strawberry Jam and doesn't seem like the culmination of their previous work to me, just an extention of one of their ideas) and the Emmy The Great and Asobi Seksu albums were disappointing for me.

Apart from U2 (who I am a huge fan of) none of those bands/artists are ones that I would go out of my way to get new stuff by or am that big a fan of. I just happened to get those albums at the tim for whatever reason.

Another factor might be tha uni work is becoming so stressful that I've not been in the right mindset to get new releases and search for new musics. After a long day at uni all I want to do is eat and sleep. This sadly is likely to carry on til the end of the academic yer in june. June being an important month when the new Sonic Youth album is released (the one album this year that I genuinely can't wait for at all). When the summer arrives, maybe then I'll finally start to catch up with everything I've missed thus far this year. Until then, in the words of the rakes, it'll probably be Work, Work, Work, Pub, Club, Sleep for me for the next quarter of the year.

Here's a list of all the albums I want to hear this year (in some cases IF they are released this year)

February Gig Round Up

So what did I get up to in February? Well...

Brakes @ Moho Live, 01/02/09
Support: Ten Bears, Airship, Sir Yes Sir (missed)
Airship were an ok epic indie rock stuffs, Ten Bears were awful and had an irritating twat being their compere, bigging them up before they went on ("they're not five bears, they'e not 6 bears, they're not even 7 fucking bears!" yes, nice now shut up and fuck off). Thankfully, Brakes saved the day completely. Firstly, Eamon came on wearing what seemed like a spacesuit ("I'm sweating on the inside an out!" his reply to being asked if he was hot wearing it), Thomas White took the piss out of the compere idiot and overall, Brakes just rocked the house down. Even being wacked in the face by Tom Whites guitar couldn't stop me enjoying this gig.

The Airborne Toxic Event @ Ruby Lounge, 03/02/09
Support: Captial
Wow. Capital were ok, but ATE were just something else entirely. The passion and emotion, the love and hate between the members. I honestly can't remember being so enthralled with watching a band like this before, apart from Arcade Fire. And their songs were ace too. Superb stuffs.

NME Awards Tour @ Academy 1, 06/02/09
Watched: Florence And the Machine, White Lies
Firstly, I downright refused to watch Friendly Fires who are awful. Secondly, whilst I wouldn't have minded watching Glasvegas, I wasn't waiting through Friendly Fires to do so, particularly seeing as I don't care that much for Glasvegas. So, Florence was very very good indeed. Didn't really fit on the big stage though. White Lies weren't bad either, though they're not that entertaining, and plenty of bands have covered their sound before. Left afterwards.

Florence And The Machine @ Ruby Lounge, 06/02/09
So after NME tour me and mates ran over to Ruby Lounge to see Florence do another gig. Which was better than her set at the NME gig. Much better on the tiny stage and more fun and enjoyable. Aceness abounded.

The Rakes @ Fibbers, York, 07/02/09
Support: Dead Pixels, Official Secrets Act
I'm so glad I took the journey to York to see The Rakes. Not only did I love the town, meet up with an old college friend and get to meet up with Olli and Rosie again, The Rakes were absolutely superb. Alan was quite mental throughout and the band just went for it, playing all their best songs (apart from their actual best song Work, Work, Work). Much dancing was had.

Asobi Seksu @ Roadhouse, 10/02/09
Support: Young British Artists
YBA were pretty damn ace. Very hazy, and I liked that their singer sung through a Megaphone all gig. Asobi Seksu, not quite so good. Sound was dodgy for them and their new material just wasn't as good as the old stuff. They didn't look particularlly into it either. Shame.

Secret Machines @ Ruby Lounge, 12/02/09
Support: The Filthy Dukes
Thoguht they tok a while getting their groove on, Filthy Dukes were quite entertaining overall. Groovy electronic stuffs with dead pan vocals. As for Secret Machines they were nothign short of amazing. Lit only by 3 huge lights behind them, rendering them shilouettes, they just ploughed through their set, making loads of noise and being so ridiculously prog it made me horny. The encore of Alone, Jealous And Stoned followed by First Wave Intact was nothing short of stunning.

School Of Seven Bells @ Night and Day, 27/02/09
Support: Apache Beat, Kyte
Apache Beat were meh. Kyte were absolutely beautiful, reminding me of Maps and The Postal Service. They instantly went onto a new list of bands that make me feel hopelessly romantic whilst listening to them. SVIIB were hugely delayed but they were ace too. More lighting would've been nice but their electronic shoegaze ways work wonders live.

And that was my february. More next month.
